4. A short 3-day course on Diagnostic Maintenance and Machine Condition Monitoring in December 10-12

We are organising a short 3-day course on Diagnostic Maintenance and Machine Condition Monitoring in December 10-12, 2007 at IIT Delhi. If anybody is interested to attend or depute any of their colleagues in the organisation, please let me know.

Vibration is an important factor that adversely affects both engineering structures and human beings. The increased levels of vibrations in structures cause wear and tear, loosening of parts, increased level of fluctuating stresses that ultimately lead to fatigue failure. In addition to these effects, vibrating structures are sources of noise. Vibrations signatures are also used for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of mechanical systems. Shutdown of costly and critical machines for even a single day cause enormous financial loss to the organization. No wonder then, a number of companies are pursuing condition monitoring option with greater interest than ever before. Reduced transducer cost and availability of low cost data acquisition hardware and software is now enabling even smaller and medium sized industrial houses to employ diagnostic and monitoring strategies for their critical equipments. The predictive maintenance through such vibration based condition monitoring is therefore an important activity in industry. The course focuses on the practical strategies that can be adopted for industrial machineries. In addition, sizeable portion of the course also addresses an important related activity essential for condition monitoring and diagnosis: vibration signal processing and analysis. Hands on practical on the rigs and computer assignments form an important part of the course.

7. Pan IIT 2008 in Chennai

My dear fraternity brothers from IITs,

I am V.Varadarajan of 1966 batch B.Tech Mechanical from IITM.

The current secretary PS Ramanathan of IITMadras alumni association has worked hard behind the scenes to get Chennai selected as the next venue for the paniit 2008 event. This also will coincide with the golden jubilee celebration of iitmadras starting from July 2008 extending to July 2009.

I volunteered to lead the participation activities for the forthcoming paniit 2008. This is being finalised for the 3rd week of December 2008. But before we do anything else we need about 200 active alumni preferably in Chennai, from all iits to take ownership for this event and give this event a direction to make this a success.

Mr. Santhanam an alumnus of IITM has kindly agreed to chair this event. We had couple of gatherings to brain storm on what and how to go about this.

A few core activities have been identified. Some of them are to chart a program for the 3 day function, organizing the venue. Marketing and PR, entertainment, and participation etc. Now we need to populate these activities with volunteers to take this forward. We like to have at least one from each iits in these committees.

All those interested in this are requested to reply with the activity you interested in. We will get you included in a committee of your choice wherever possible. Those who have attended the earlier conferences may have realized what a great opportunity this is to bring the alumni together.

I am sure you have all experienced greater friendship develop, when we take on a project like this and complete it a team. You are welcome to send this note to any one who you know will be interested in participating.

Please do respond.
