Digest#10: Upcoming Events (others)

1. INDEST-AICTE Workshop and Fourth Annual Meet

IIT Delhi, 19th to 20th Dec. 2006, Venue: Seminar Hall, IIT Delhi, Timing: 9.30 A.M - 5.30 P.M, Organized by IITD

Background

The "Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences and Technology (INDEST) Consortium" was set-up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in the year 2003 with 38 centrally-funded Government institutions including IITs, IISc, NITs, NERIST, ISM, IIIT, IIITM & NITIE as its core members with a provision to extend it to all engineering colleges and technological institutions under its open ended proposition. While the Ministry provides funds required for access to selected e-resources for the core members, other institutions may join the Consortium for any of its resource(s) by paying for them at highly discounted rates and a nominal membership fee. By the end of the first year, the Consortium had 119 members which included 38 core members, 64 AICTE-supported members and 17 members under self-supported category. The Consortium was re-named as INDEST-AICTE Consortium in December 2005 with the AICTE playing pivotal role in enrolling its affiliated engineering colleges and institutions as members of the Consortium for selected e-resources at much lower rates of subscription. The Consortium has enrolled 490 members as in Oct. 2006 including 388 member institutions under its self-supported category.

The INDEST-AICTE Consortium, on the basis of sheer strength of present and prospective numbers of institutions has attracted the best possible price and terms of agreement from the publishers. The Consortium subscribes to over 6,500 electronic journals, numerous conference proceedings, standards and e-books from a number of publishers and aggregators. The INDEST Web Site hosts a search and browse interfaces to locate journals, their URLs and member institutions. The Consortium supports open access initiatives and has taken-up new initiatives related to content creation under its extended activitie.

Some of the important activities taken-up are under this initiative are: i) Setting-up Interoperable institutional repositories; ii) Electronic Submission of Theses and Dissertations; and iii) Web-based Union Catalogue of Journals and other Serial Publications.

Objectives

The INDEST-AICTE Consortium Workshop and the Fourth Annual Meet is being organized with the following objectives:

· to promote the optimal use of e-resources made accessible to various institutions under the Consortium;

· to identify, plan and undertake training and capacity building for the users of the e-resources across all its member institutions;

· to promote interaction amongst member institutions and usage of access and monitoring interfaces (e-RAMS);

· to discuss additional activities that may be undertaken under its extended activities;

· to evaluate the current status of document delivery services through JCCC and to discuss and deliberate upon the possibility of extending it to all the members of the Consortium;

· to review present resources, identify new resources and deliberate upon possibility of adding new resources with member institutions paying their own subscriptions; and

· to identify ways and means to increase the number of members for various resources so as to avail lower rates of subscription.

Scope of the workshop

The Workshop will have presentations on the core objectives followed by a panel discussion on the subject. The speakers and panellists include known authorities in their respective subject fields. The Workshop will also have presentations from the e-publishers and aggregators whose resources are being subscribed by the Consortium. Scope and contents of the Workshop can further be expanded depending on the feedback received from the participants.

Who should Participate?

The participation is strictly by invitation for the members of INDEST-AICTE Consortium. All member institutions of the Consortium may nominate one participant from their institutions.

Registration Fee

The participation is by invitation only. No registration fee is being charged from the participants from the member institutions.

Travel & Accommodation

The arrangement for lodging of participants is being made at the Institute?s Guest House or in neighbouring guest houses on first-cum-first-serve basis (on twin sharing basis). All participants are required to meet their boarding, lodging and other expenses through their institutions.

2.
Invitation - DMS (Parivartan - management festival)

Dear All,

We invite you to Parivartan'07,the managemenmt festival of Department of Management Studies,IIT Delhi.

Parivartan 2007:Ignite Innovate Transcend

It's a long cherished dream of every Management Student to make a difference to the corporate world; to venture out there into the big, bad, mean world of corporate competition and leave upon it a mark of his/her own. We all have ideas, we all have thoughts, but there is a fine line of daring to dream between a normal Management Student and the winner who eventually makes the world stand up and take notice of him/her. That is what winners are made of…

And we, at Department of Management Studies, IIT-Delhi, are in the business of grooming winners. We are in the business of instilling the attitude to win in each cell of the brain of each of us. We know what it takes to win and we want to nurture it in all of us and spread it across the world!

We need to ignite our thoughts into ideas. Everyone thinks, but not everyone takes them seriously. We often lack the confidence to take them seriously! That's what differs a prodigy from a plebeian. That's not all. Not every one who has an idea converts it into a process. Managers today are defined by the efficiency of their processes. What has Jack Welch done to GE which the other didn't? The answer is all in the processes, and efficient and successful processes emerge from Innovation. Every innovator doesn't turn a leader. Atom Bomb was an innovation, too! Every coin has two sides. One can turn his face off at your innovation or can stand up and take note of it. That's what is differentiates a Leader and a Follower. You need to foster the right innovations to transcend the hoi polloi and emerge a winner, a true leader, a complete person!

At DMS, we present you this process of emergence of a Complete Person of an aspiring Manager in two days through our annual Business Festival Parivartan on the 3rd and 4th of February, 2007. Parivartan 07 comes to you with the theme Ignite. Innovate. Transcend. We present you events that ignite your brains and plough up creative ideas, innovate them into efficient processes and thus, transcend the natural. Unleash the super power of Management in each one of you…

Ignite ideas in your brains with events like The Business Plan where we provide you a platform to present your plans for all types of Business, Best Consultant where you consult for real-time industry cases and see your ideas being given a shape, The Business Quiz. Innovate the existing process, add them your mark and value in events like The Apprentice where the rule is that there is no rule. How to make things work is all up to you. You are the master. ADD-vert is an event where the only rule is Innovation. Innovate or disappear is the only rule of the game. Make innovative ad campaigns and project your brand. Transcend your own self in the company of highly knowledgeable corporates and academia as they brood over the contemporary Managerial issues in Corporate Round Table. Realize how effective and important Media is and how to use it to Managerial success at the Media Conclave.

There's more to Parivartan! Many more events like Informals, Cultural Night, Dance Night are lined up to grab your attention and teach you how a Manager should chill out… Come to Parivartan, Unleash the fun….

Regards
Team Parivartan'07

Digest#10: Past Events

Annual Gathering of IITians at Gurgaon

IIT Delhi Alumni Association (NCR) Gurgaon chapter organized its annual bash at Gurgaon on 9th December 2006 at MDI Campus. This year's extravaganza included musical programme and Fire Display show to attract greater participation. Event was a great success and was filled with fun and frolic for more than 250 gathering of both alumni and their families.

This event was supported by Elnova Pvt. Ltd (Vishnu Sahai, 69/BT/EL), Fortis Healthcare Ltd (Daljit Singh, 74/BT/CH), Hewlett-Packard Sales India Ltd. (Ravi Raj Sagar, 78/BT/ME), Classteacher Learning Systems (Sameer Buti, 95/BT/ME) and Pepsico (Frito-lay Division).

For the first time one could see 25 percent participation by the enthusiastic younger alumni.
For this event organizers had received confirmations of participation from more than 350 alumni and their family surpassing all previous targets. However, a note of little discontent was that even after their conformation by e-mails, 47 percent of the alumni did not turn-up. This was of course little disappointment for the organizing team.

It will not be out of place to mention that around 400 IITD alumni are spread all over the upcoming millennium city Gurgaon, occupying key positions in society and industry. According to Dr. Deepak Dogra and Ashok Panjwani attempt will be made to focus activities as well as any such technology development initiatives that are critical to give a kick start to the booming industry of Gurgaon. This push is particularly important at a time when Gurgaon is leaping towards one of the biggest industrial and IT hub in the country. Since IITs have produced the best technical talent in the world, it is befitting that they fill this vacuum and provide leadership and guidance for any such initiatives towards the technological growth of Gurgaon in the future. This would be beneficial to the citizen of Gurgaon, as basic issues of concern like water, power and infrastructure would be brainstormed.
President IITD Alumni Association also shared his thoughts and vision of and the linkages that would result with the alma mater to ensure greater glory to the institute and greater recognition to IITDAA.

The celebration ended with a Fire Display and gala dinner.

3. NRI establishes universal private charitable foundation.

The founder Mr. Vinesh Saxena of Vinesh Saxena family foundation, was born in middle class family in small town (Bisauli) in U.P. From the very beginning he was goal oriented. He excelled in education. In high school Provincial examination he passed with honors and ranked seventeenth in the whole province of Utter Pradesh. He earned Government Post Metric National merit scholarship, which was given to 200 students of whole India in 1959. Subsequently, he did B.Sc. from Agra University and Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi in 1967.

After doing his bachelor of engineering, he went to Canada and did his master of engineering at the University of New Brunswick. He earned an MBA from McGill University. He is also a member of Order of Engineers, the Chartered Management Accountants and the Society of cost engineers. He worked almost 25 years with Pratt and Whitney as engineer. He also taught part time at Concordia and McGill Universities. Mr. Saxena worked tirelessly, working full time, and teaching part time. He owned real estate and stayed active in financial markets all simultaneously.

After working very hard for almost forty years in Canadian society and leading a humble moderate life, he decided to establish a foundation. He felt ready to realize his other ambitions. He established this foundation to return what he had received from the Society for its betterment.

This perpetual trust has two objectives:
1. To help the needy: If you are in real need of money (could be a student, single mother/father, sick, poor, abused or anyone else in real need) and require financial aid, you can apply for “seed money” from Vinesh Saxena family foundation. The person may be from any part of the world. As at present one student of from Thailand has got help from the foundation to do his masters of engineering. A lady from New Delhi is getting financial help to support her child’s education when her husband is out of job due to accident. Visit website www.vsffoundation.ca
Mr. Saxena has compiled seven principles which he considers a tool kit for life. It is his inner most conviction that if people follow these principles in life, they can gain complete control of their life as well as destiny and be happy, self sufficient beings. However, due to circumstances, one is in "dire financial need", he/she can apply for assistance from this foundation.
2. Find answers to the "Unanswered" fundamental questions:
Even though Vinesh’s journey through worldly happenings- education, work, marriage, children etc.- his mind was always thinking about the same fundamental questions related to soul, life after death and the existence of God. Life could not just end after death, but what thereafter? He was brought up in a conventional Hindu traditional family but from the very beginning (may be at the age of 14) he started ignoring religious rituals. Examining different religions Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christianity etc., he came to the conclusion that one has to rise above and beyond all these man-made religions to find real spirituality.
This foundation will provide financial or other support to promote efforts in getting answers to the fundamental questions i.e. "is there a soul"? "Is there life after death"? "Does God exist? The so-called religions do not provide answers to these basic questions. They even contradict each other- i.e. according to religious doctrines, the Hindus get reincarnated, but Muslims do not get reincarnated and Christians get bodily resurrected. What happens to communists, atheists, followers of "Jedi" etc. etc.? Religions originated at different places at different times in history to fill a void. They may be able to teach some morality, but just that. There is no scientific inquiry or universality as regards to answering fundamental questions related to soul, life after death and God. Mr. Saxena feels that is of utmost importance to obtain answers to these questions.
If soul and life after death do not exist, if there is no God and we are just random happenings, then one's attitude will be completely different than if these things do exist.

4.
An Indian in Cowboy Country

Pradeep Anand, IITB, his book, An Indian in Cowboy Country, has hit the stands at real and virtual
bookstores. It is available at Barnes & Noble stores, at www.barnesandnoble.com, and www.amazon.com. Details about the book can be seen at www.pradeepanand.com
An Indian in Cowboy Country is about an IIT engineer's sometimes humorous,
sometimes poignant struggle to fit and assimilate into the fabric of American life.

Please read "An Indian in Cowboy Country" and let me know what you think about it. Also, please help me spread the word. If appropriate, please pass this email on to your friends; some will empathize with the hero, but all will gain insights into Indian immigrants in the US.

Nandan Nilekani, CEO, Infosys, has written the foreword to the book. He says, "An Indian in Cowboy Country is a must read. Pradeep has done an amazing job, with great simplicity, in chronicling an Asian Indian's journey in an alien society, simultaneously maintaining one's cultural moorings
and moral center."

Award-winning author and poet, Chitra Divakaruni says, "Pradeep Anand has put together a collection of highly enjoyable stories about the many challenges of being a brown-skinned techie in Texas. Immigrants everywhere will relate to this perceptive and relevant book."

The Mayor Pro Tem of Houston, Texas, Michael Berry said, "Pradeep Anand has given voice, in a very sincere, real way, to the phenomenon of overachieving Indians assimilating into the fabric of American life. He seems to effortlessly capture the essence of their struggle to fit in while retaining and celebrating very different roots. This journey is comical, poignant, and -- until now -- little known outside the world of those experiencing it.

A good read, whether you grew up in India, the U.S., or anywhere else!"

2. IITDAA Silver Jubilee Reunion Batch 1982.

Dear Friends,

A Silver Jubilee Reunion comes once in a lifetime, and for the batch of '82, this is the year when we will come together again. This will be the opportunity to relive the five years of our youth - our formative years - our glorious past. We will not get another chance to meet so many of our batch-mates who were once an indivisible part of our lives. We hope to meet again the many friends of yesteryears and hope to recognize them after 25 years have gone by. As communicated earlier, the Silver Jubilee Event is being held from the 28th to 30th of December this year, 2006.

All 1982 graduates, PGs (BTech, MS, MTech, PhDs, etc) are invited along with their families.Families are an integral part of this event - they have to see what we have been talking to them about - with their own eyes. You can get your children and spouse to walk the corridors of your hostel and meet with the profs - specially the ones from whom you once kept a long distance. You can take time out to explore the examination halls where you once spent time looking at the ceiling or sideways since the answers to confounding questions were almost always found on other people's scribble sheets. You can do almost whatever you want back at IITD.

Please pull in all those with whom you are in touch, help them make up their minds. We need to make the best of this opportunity. The earlier batches enjoyed every bit of their bash and wanted more. Come and let's make this the best bash of our lives.Most of the details have already been worked out and the program is also given below.
