Dear Friends,
A Silver Jubilee Reunion comes once in a lifetime, and for the batch of '83, this is the year when we will come together again. This will be the opportunity to relive the five years of our youth - our formative years - our glorious past. We will not get another chance to meet so many of our batch-mates who were once an indivisible part of our lives. We hope to meet again the many friends of yesteryears and hope to recognize them after 25 years have gone by.
As communicated earlier, the Silver Jubilee Event is being held from the 22-25 December this year, 2007. All 1983 graduates, PGs (
Families are an integral part of this event - they have to see what we have been talking to them about - with their own eyes. You can get your children and spouse to walk the corridors of your hostel and meet with the profs - specially the ones from whom you once kept a long distance. You can take time out to explore the examination halls where you once spent time looking at the ceiling or sideways since the answers to confounding questions were almost always found on other people's scribble sheets. You can do almost whatever you want back at IITD
Please pull in all those with whom you are in touch, help them make up their minds. We need to make the best of this opportunity. The earlier batches enjoyed every bit of their bash and wanted more. Come and let's make this the best bash of our lives.
Most of the details have already been worked out and the program is already sent to you. However, suggestions/ ideas are welcome for any minor changes in the schedule/ events.

There was a Board meeting of the Pan IIT Global Board on 5th July evening chaired by Rajat Gupta. The Directors of the IITs and other Board members attended the same. The Constitution of Pan IIT Global Board and also that of the Pan IIT India Board were discussed at length. The minutes would be issued separately. I t was a very fruitful meeting.
A booth was allocated to IIT Delhi, IITDEF and IITDAA. We jointly displayed our exhibition material. We had carried with us the banner of IITDAA and enlarged photos of our activities for display. We had also taken with us 200 copies of the latest Newsletter which were distributed at the stall. The IITDAA members participated in all the panel discussions and seminars spread over three days. The schedule and the subject of the various discussions and the participants are being circulated separately.
8th July was devoted exclusively for each of the seven IITs to interact by themselves. The IIT Delhi event commenced with the presentation of IITDAA. It was well received by the audience. About sixty participants were there including the Director IIT and the faculty members. The IIT Delhi alumni from the Bay area showed keen interest in the activities of IITDAA and wished to be closely associated with the same. We have collected the contact details of the Alumni and will update the same in our Data Base.
On the 9th July was the Industrial meet organized by Satwant Kaur.
On 10th July, Ash Gupta of American Express hosted a dinner to the IITD faculty and the Alumni at

Satwant Kaur, CTO, Emerging Technologies Group, TIBC welcomed the elite group of 25 that consisted of IIT Delhi faculty, and heads of engineering/ founding members from various organizations including: IIT Delhi, IBM, TIBCO Software, Juniper Networks, Nokia-Siemens Research Center, Business Objects, Yahoo Research, Autodesk, Lawrence Livermore National Lab INGRES, EMC, Cadence and Stanford University Satwant expressed her deep gratitude to IIT Delhi faculty from her student days as B.Tech (EE) and her colleagues during her research faculty tenure at IITD CS department. She also expressed her deep appreciation for her PhD supervisor from
Everyone introduced themselves around the (square) table. From the very beginning, the enthusiasm was very high. The tone was set by active participants including Murat Somnez, member of founding team, TIBCO Software, Sal Visca, CTO, Business Objects, Louis Scheffer, fellow at Cadence and Prof Paulraj, Professor, Stanford University Pradeep Sindhu, founder of Juniper Networks led most of the anel discussions showing us his unique and brilliant perspective on every aspect of the conversation.
Prof Surendra Prasad, Director of IIT Delhi, gave the IITD keynote on "The IITs : Knowledge Ecosystems". During and after the keynote he graciously answered questions in his most honest and open manner. Some highlights of the Director's keynote were:
(1) First batch of B.Tech. students graduated in 1956 from IIT Kharagpur
(2) Alumni among the most prominent executives, managers, entrepreneurs and inventors in the world
(3) Few UG institutions can claim such staggering success for their graduates
(4) 10% of start-ups in
Prof Prasad cited the reasons for success as being:
- Enlightened and generous support of the Government of India,
- Academic freedom and merit as the sole criterion for entry,
- Talented students,
- Faculty commitment to teaching and research,
- Nurturing of core values: Integrity, Academic freedom, Merit, Excellence and Open-mindedness.
For a long time, Prof Prasad addressed every thought-provoking question that was addressed to him. This sparked a lot of lively discussions. My favorites were the digs Murat (TIBCO) and Anant (IBM) had at each other.
Helping contribute to the conversations about IIT Delhi was the IIT Faculty: Prof S S Yadav, Head of Management Studies, Prof A K Srivasatva, Head of Biotech, Prof S M Ishtiaque, Head of Textile, Prof Viresh Dutta,
Dr Anant Jhingran, CTO - Information Management, IBM gave the Industry keynote. He shared with us an IBM perspective on Academia R&D partnership. Anant stressed that now is the time for more open collaborative research models. In such partnerships, IBM's strategy focused on IBM Research to be world class, to collaborate openly across IBM Research's worldwide labs, to collaborate openly with universities on strategically defined topics, and to use emerging open source communities as a source of headlights. The key is to be global, act local.
Paul Maglio, Senior Manager,
Prof M Balakrishnan, Dean - Post Graduate Studies and Research, IIT Delhi gave a talk on Synergizing Academic Research with Industry Needs. He also led lots of discussions around research in Computer Science.
Charlie Perkins, Senior Fellow,
Ed Moses, Associate Director, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, delivered a talk on International Co-operations in Laser Fusion Energy. He talked about the National Ignition Facility, their areas of research in laser technologies, and addressed questions about whether NIF is a precursor to an inertial fusion energy plan? He also provided a glimpse into the possible future that other found to be a very desirable future.
Bill Maimone, Senior Vice President, Ingres, carried on a great discussion on Open Source and the Academic Community. And had us walk through the memory lane starting from the beginning of Ingres.
It was an honor to have Prabhakar Raghavan, Head of Yahoo Research who made it in spite of short notice and other pressing engagements.
Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President (SVP), Autodesk was a consistent voice throughout providing a Sense of balance between different perspectives.
The two young IBM engineers, Anjali Behal and Amit Behal were the most attentive amongst the audience, and helped keep the summit going by taking over the registration, the photo shoots, and the projector operations.
Shawn Douglas, Director, EMC, moderated the Round Table Discussions and summed up the summit with his Closing Comments. Only Shawn could have carried out so admirable the challenging task of moderating the discussions that were going on at such a level of enthusiasm, so that we exceed the two-hour summit by only two hours, and yet covered so much ground.
With his great humility, Prof Surendra Prasad, Director of IITD presented Satwant a gift from IIT Delhi. Satwant emotionally expressed that the gift of education she received form IIT Delhi will remain with her until her last breath.
The discussions were great fun! Thanks for making it so.

IITDAA was able to display their exhibits at the stall along with IITD and IITDEF. This would not have been possible if IITDAA members were not physically present at the meet.
Further steps to be taken
IITDAA needs to be pro active in participating in the activities of PAN IIT Global Board to increase its visibility.
IITDAA needs to enhance its global presence. Initiative in this regard has already been taken by electing and Global Co-opted members. This should be taken further to increase IITDAA activities at all places and with appropriate communication to all.
The Data base of IITDAA needs to be updated constantly to bring within its fold all alumni who can contribute to its activities.
The IITDAA Web need to be kept updated constantly so that it becomes attractive to the alumni who seek information about IITD and the activities of IITDAA.

In recognition of their significant efforts and contributions made by them for the development and progress of the Institute.
Delivering the convocation address, Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia stated that this institution has built an Indian brand name which is recognised around the world. The IITs stand out as outstanding examples of institutions providing top quality engineering education at the undergraduate level, not only in
change than our generation did, and you will find it both exciting and challenging. The first is pace of growth, the second pace of technology change, and the third globalisation. The three are closely interrelated and mutually reinforcing. As far as pace of growth is concerned, the economy is growing at about 9% and with the right economic policies we can maintain that growth rate, and perhaps even improve upon it, over the next twenty years. With population growing more slowly at 1.5% and also decelerating, it means our per capita income will grow at 7.5% or a little more. At that rate, per capita income will double in 9 years, he said. The second reason for rapid change is that technology is changing much faster. That is certainly true in the area of information and communication technology. The IT and communications revolution has changed the way people organise their lives and their businesses. It has created new businesses which could
not exist earlier. And yet, it is remarkable how recently and rapidly this has happened.
In his address, he also mentioned that the Indian educational system is at cross roads. I look at it as the age-old conflict of quantity versus quality. With a billion plus population with more than one fifth of them in an age group to be educated, quantity is a social responsibility. On the other hand, in the globalized world of today on the threshold of a knowledge era, quality education is a necessity. The challenge is on reconciling quantity with quality. The challenge is not only to the educators but to all- the government, the ducationists and the community as a whole.
Welcoming the Chief Guest, Prof. Ramamurthy stated that Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission and a well known economist of international standing, has been intimately connected with the Indian economy for nearly three decades. Resurgent
remember him as the midwife of the Indian economic reforms of the nineties that laid the foundation stone for what we are seeing in the marketplace today.
On this occation, Prof. Surendra Prasad, Director, presented a brief report and highlighted the activities, achievements and future plans of the Institute. Prof. Prasad informed that in a recent survey conducted by the
Appreciating the efforts and contributions made by its alumni, he stated that our alumni have extended significant support to the Institute for its academic and research programmes by way of instituting chairs in various fields at the Institute. As on date, 30 Chairs are in operation at the Institute. The Institute has been actively involved in collaborative programmes with national and international organizations/ universities to remain at the forefront in scientific and technological development and to share the knowledge for mutual benefits. IIT Delhi has currently 49 MoUs/Agreements with Foreign Institutions/Organizations and 37 MoUs/ Agreements with Indian Institutions/Organizations. The main objectives of collaboration include exchange of students and faculty, joint research, and fellowships for training and research at doctoral and post-doctoral levels, he said. Recognising the efforts and contributions made by the faculty
of the institute, he said, the quality of an academic institution largely depends on the faculty. Our Faculty is one of the finest in the country and is recognized internationally for their quality of research. They contribute a lot for the development of the nation by being associated with a large number of decisionmaking bodies in providing advice on policy matters and technical issues. Many of our faculty members serve on the editorial Boards of reputed journals, review papers for publications, serve on committees for recruitment of professionals, and are on the Boards of many institutions and organizations. Several faculty members have been bestowed with honours/awards and elected as fellows of several professional national/international bodies. Our academic programmes cover a wide range of science and engineering disciplines. In B.Tech. Programmes, for which the entry is through the Joint Entrance Examination, we have steadily increased our intake and during the year 2006-2007, 2265 UG students were on roll. The enrolment of postgraduate students during the year 2006-2007 was 2666. These figures
include 767 women students. There were 20 foreign students from 9 countries pursuing undergraduate/postgraduate education at the Institute. In order to make IIT Delhi more
international in character and to make better use of international intellectual resources, we are constantly working towards increasing the strength of international students and faculty in the campus, he said.
He informed the gathering that in order to motivate the students, the Institute has instituted a scheme for grant of partial financial assistance to Ph.D., M.Tech., M.Des., M.S. (R) and MBA students and post-doctoral fellows working in various projects for attending international conferences. Under this scheme, a grant of Rs.20,000/- is given to the selected student as partial financial assistance and during the year, a total of 46 students have been given this grant. It is proposed to increase this number to 80 during the current year. With regard to the sponsored research and consultancy activities of the Institute, he reported that the Institute accords importance to research and development projects sponsored by various agencies and industry. During the year 92 Sponsored Research Projects with a total funding of Rs. 38.82 crores were undertaken. Consultancy assignments worth Rs. 16.55 crores were undertaken at the Institute during the year. These include 816 Consultancy Jobs worth Rs. 12.71 crores undertaken by
IRD, 45 Technology Development Projects / Contract Research Projects worth Rs. 3.26 crores undertaken by FITT and 15 HRD Programmes with a value of Rs. 57.56 lacs organized by FITT. He further added that to remain in the forefront on the scientific and technology development and to share the experience and knowledge, the Institute is actively involved in colla-borative programmes with international organizations/universities. A large number of collaborative Research Projects are under operation with Institutes/Organisations of
