We are glad to announce the elections of new members of the Executive Committee of IIT Delhi Alumni Association for the year 2007-08.

Executive Committee of IITDAA The Executive Committee of IIT Delhi Alumni Association consists of:
i. Chairman
ii. Vice Chairman
iii. Twenty one alumni elected by the General Body of IITDAA
iv. Two Senior Professors of IIT Delhi nominated by the Chairman
v. One of the General Secretaries of the Student Organizations for the running year nominated by Students Affairs Council
vi. The immediate Past President

The Director, IIT Delhi is the Chairman of IIT Delhi Alumni Association and is an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee.

The Vice-Chairman is nominated by the Executive Committee.

Two Senior Professors of IIT Delhi, General Secretary of Student Organization and the immediate past president are ex-officio members of the Executive Committee.

Each elected member has a term of three years. As a result, one third members of the executive committee retire every year.

Intermediate vacancies, if any, are notified and filled by elections during the general body meeting. Such members hold their office for residual term of the vacancy.

The Executive Committee may also fill up such vacancies. An elected member relinquishes his/her office on expiry of his term. He can be re-elected only after a gap of one year from his previous term.

The Executive committee must have
i. At least one member of minimum 25 years of standing
ii. At least three members of minimum 15 years of standing
iii. At least five members of minimum 5 years of standing

Current distribution of the elected members:

The present executive committee has the following distribution (excluding the retiring members):
i. Members of more than 5 year standing 14
ii. Members of more than 15 years standing 11
iii. Members of more than 25 years standing 8

Vacancies and Eligibility:

There are seven vacancies to be filled up by election during the Annual General Body Meeting. The term of the SEVEN elected EC members will be for three years starting from 2007-08.

It is required to fill up the seven vacancies as:

i. At least one member of minimum 25 years of standing
ii. At least three members of minimum 15 years of standing
iii. At least five members of minimum 5 years of standing
iv. The remaining two members may have any seniority

An Executive member may be re-elected after a gap of one year from the date of his relinquishing office.

Electoral College:

The Body of Electors shall comprise of all alumni members of the IIT Delhi Alumni Association.

Process:
1. Nomination Form for election to Executive Committee is required to be proposed and seconded by two alumni. Completed nomination form must be received at IIT Delhi Alumni Associations Office latest by 5.30 PM on 10th April 2007. The nomination form can be sent at the following address:

Nominations sent by e-mail must be followed by a confirmation copy, on plain paper as per the enclosed format. Confirmation copy must be received at IITDAA Office latest by 5.30 PM on 15th April 2007 (hand delivered/ post/courier). E-mail nomination, if not supported by confirmation copy shall be treated as invalid.

2. Nominations will be examined by the returning officer and a list of valid nominations received will be prepared by 5:30 PM on 15th April 2007. List of valid nominations will be circulated to the Executive Committee and alumni thru email on 15th Apr. 2007.

3. Elections will be held during the Annual General Meeting on 29th Apr. 2007 by secret ballot. There is no provision of proxy. Members present, in person, during the meeting shall cast their votes.

4. The ballot paper will list all valid nominations. Alumni members are requested to vote for a maximum of seven candidates (equal to no. of vacancies). Any ballot paper with more than seven votes will be declared void.

5. A tally of votes polled by each candidate will be prepared. From these tally seven candidates polling highest votes will be declared winners.

6. In case of a tie, the returning officer may choose an appropriate method for resolving it.

General:
1. This notice is prepared keeping in view the rules and regulations of IITDAA as mentioned in its constitution.
2. If there is a discrepancy, the interpretation as suggested by the returning officer shall be final.

3. Prof. Shashi Gulhati's Book "The IITs - slumping or soaring"

I am delighted that my book "The IITs - slumping or soaring" is being noticed and read.
The PTI story on it released on Jan 1, 2007 has been very extensively and prominently
carried by the media. The publishers tell me that it is selling well.

Their website carries it as a 'bestseller'.

The issues that the book raises are very real and we need to find workable solutions for them. I have, of course, suggested some solutions but they are not necessarily the best. My hope in writing the book was that it would generate some open and free discussion and through it the best solutions will emerge. As you know, I feel the alumni have the most important role to play in this process. I was thrilled that Pradeep liked the book enough to have it gifted to all the Distinguished Alumni who attended the PanIIT Global Conference in Bombay in December 2006. Prof. Ashok Misra, Director IIT Bombay rang me up to compliment me on the book - he has procured enough copies to distribute them to his senior colleagues at IIT Bombay. Prof. Surendra Prasad our own director at IIT Delhi took time out to attend a panel discussion that BSP at IIT Delhi recently organized where I and others who have written books with IIT as their locale talked about our books; he later complimented me on my presentation and the book.

Prof. S. S. Murthy, President of the Faculty Forum at IIT Delhi has written to all the faculty members at IIT advising them all to read my book.

4. An Appeal fm fellow IITian

Dear friends,

Dear Co-IITians,

I am a lateral entrant into the mighty IIT system through my Ph.D. work on theme ‘Proactive Policing and Adolescent Students’ during 1998-2002 in IIT, Delhi. Presently, I am the Member Secretary of Soli Sorabjee Committee which has drafted a new Police Act, leading to the much-needed police reforms.

The upshot for this personal letter is to seek your kind indulgence for building the first-ever ‘National Centre for Adolescents’, in HAF-I, Sector-22, Dwarka, New Delhi. The Center is to act as a think-tank and a trainers’ growth center for development and empowerment of adolescents (aged 10 to 19 years).

You would be aware that teenagers/adolescents (aged 10 to 19 years) form a vital segment of our population (23% of the total India’s population). Their development and empowerment needs to be carefully visualized and fulfilled. Our Trust has been focusing on adolescents for the last 12 years. Our flagship program, Shakti , is a novel program for mainstreaming school drop-outs and under-achievers, which program has been picked up by the UNFPA as an international model. The Planning Commission of India has also accepted it as a Plan program. We have programs for student counselling and career guidance, besides a number of vocational courses. The construction of the National Center is going on (A photograph is enclosed). More than a crore of rupees have been spent so far, in which major contributions are from the Delhi Government (Rs. 25 lakhs), Dr. Karan Singh (Rs.20 lakhs from MPLADS); Indian Oil Corporation (Rs. 10 Lakhs); Atul Nissar Group (Rs. 10 lakhs); Naveen Jindal (Rs. 3 Lakhs) and many others. The construction is in crucial stage and requiring funds to the extent of Rs. 30 to 40 lakhs.

At this juncture, we are venturing out with this public appeal for benevolent contributors. All those who contribute Rs. One lakh and above shall be recognized in the “Roll of Honors” to be permanently displayed at the entrance to the Centre. We may also inform you that all contributions towards this National Center are 100% tax exempt u/s 35AC, vide Ministry of Finance’s Notification No.4/2006/F.No.NC-270/358/2005 dated 3rd February 2006.

A BRIEF ON URIVI VIKRAM CHARITABLE TRUST

The Urivi Vikram Charitable Trust (UVCT) is a non-governmental organization, striving for the social and economic empowerment of young adults (13 to 21 years) since 1991.Its motto is to find ways and means to transform India’s “Burden of Population” into an “Asset of Human Resources”. The Trust rightly visualizes that due care must be given to the stage of ‘adolescence’, a period of rapid development and identity crisis in one’s growth. In this regard, the Trust is providing career guidance and counseling services to school/college going children under its project ‘Prerana’. For school dropouts and under achievers, it is running a personality development and life skills education program under its project ‘Shakti’. During the last 14 years, the Trust succeeded in counseling more than 50,000 schooled children, and assisting about 6000 school dropouts, of whom about 60 percent could be put into gainful employment. Besides these activities, the Trust provides vocational training in various marketable skills at its centres. UVCT has become a national organization, with its chapters functioning in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana ,Karnataka, and Maharastra.

Under its project ‘Prerana’, the Trust also undertakes ‘Career Melas’ on regular basis. On these occasions, students from various government and other schools are assembled and services of qualified/eminent speakers are utilized to deliver lectures on various career prospects.The SHAKTI programme prepared by the Trust for main-streaming school dropouts and under achievers, has since been accepted by the UN Inter Agencies Working Group (July 2003) as basis for their programme on ‘Life Skills for Health Promotion of out-of-school adolescents’. The Trust held a National Meet in July 1999, on the theme ‘Towards a Policy for Young Adults’. The outcome of the meet was brought-out into an advocacy document for ‘National Policy for Young Adults’, which was submitted to the Government of India and the Planning Commission of India. As a follow up, the Planning Commission of India constituted a Study Group which brought out a ‘Report on Adolescents’ (June 2001). The GOI, Min. of Finance has since cleared the ‘Scheme for Development and empowerment of Adolescents’ by agreeing to release 47 crores during the current 10th Five Year Plan. UVCT deserves to be credited for finding a due place to ‘Adolescents’ in the scheme of Indian Planning.

The Trust held yet another National Meet in July 2005 on theme ‘ Adolescents : Vision 2020’ in order draw the attention of the policy makers and relevant segments of the society about the challenges being faced by and opportunities available for the adolescents , in our endeavours to make India a Super Power by year 2020. About 80 experts and 500 adolescents, from different parts of the country, participated in the Trust. The Trust is in the process of building the first ever ‘National Center for Adolescents’ in Sector 22, Dwaraka, Delhi. The Center shall be used for conducting and promoting in-depth studies and run a number of projects for the development and empowerment of adolescents. It shall be offering a forum for numerous other NGOs and governmental agencies working or hoping to work for adolescents. It may be mentioned that the proposed National Center shall be first of its kind, which shall be concentrating on the needs and growth of adolescents, the future of the Nation. The Trust brought out books titled “Teenage Blues”(in English) and “Kishoron Key Komal Duniya”(in Hindi) for the guidance of Parents, Teachers and Counselors to have a proper understanding of teenagers and their actions. Yet another publication of the Trust is “Adolescent Concerns Through Own Eyes”.

Dear Friends,

Praful's recent photograph and his CV, that Mr Pradeep Nadkarni, Pune (IIT B) has helped prepare for him. Thanks also Mr. Arun Dabir, Pune (IIT B) for his advice. Friends, we together with the family of Dhongades, have done it. Praful will be ready in about 2 more weeks to take up some job next month. He is eager to start some work and also wants to train & get a driving licence! Great news indeed, isn't it? His mobile phone and bank account in his own name will be functional next week. It took some time to establish an address for him, without any identity card, driving licence, tel phone bill or electricity bill. But all this has been sorted out today. His E mail connection will also start after receiving the Laptop from Rohtash Mal next thurs or so. A. Rs.79,500/- received so far in Pune by Praful and his guardian Sangeet Dhongade.Sanjay has also asked the paying guest to vacate the 2 rooms in his house , so that Praful can have privacy and independence. .Mr Rohtash Mal has already delivered a mobile and will be sending Praful a laptop too, by next Thursday. the Director, faculty, staff and students for IIT Delhi are greatly concerned about Mr. Chiplunkar well being. By voluntary efforts, they have collected Rs.48,818/- from the IIT Delhi campus community.

Mr Ramesh Suri has also offered to take him up with him personally, if Suzlon does not work for whatever reason.
Dr Amit Sengupta,Mumbai for Psychiatric help, which has helped Praful a lot, in just a single sitting itself. Ashok Zaveri has also offered a job in his factory. South Asian Research Centre for Advertisement, Journalism & Cartoons (SARCAJC) is committed to the study, research and promotion of advertisements, journalism and cartoons. Many research centres exists in the West, but ours is the first initiative of its kind.

Aim: To research, acquire and preserve cartoons, advertisement in Newspapers, Journals, and Magazines that constitute rich cultural heritage of this vast region. Projects related to Indian cartoons, advertisements and journalism during British Raj are being conducted.
In order to promote innovative representations, we aim to hold exhibitions, seminars, conferences, workshops related to cartoons, advertisement and journalism. And of course, print media watch. The long term aim is to build an archival depository related to much

Medal Award to Dr. Sujeet Chaudhary In the recently held 18th Annual General Meeting of Materials Research Society of India (MRSI) at National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi during February 12-14, 2007, Dr. Sujeet Chaudhary was conferred with "MRSI Medal Award".

The award is given in recognitions of the significant contributions by the researchers in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. On this occasion, he was also invited to deliver the MRSI Medal Lecture on "Room Temperature Ferromagnetism in the Transition Metal Substituted II-VI Semiconductors-The Materials for Spintronics".

9. Silicon Valley’s Immigration Problem

If you could choose between starting a high-tech career in India or the U.S., which would you pick?

Indian immigrant Rosen Sharma opted for the U.S. in 1993 and has done extraordinarily well here. But if he were just coming out of college these days, he says, he would pick India. The business opportunities are better, he says, and quality of life issues are at least as good: Nice housing? Schools? Safe streets? The chance to feel prosperous on a young engineer’s salary? India is holding its own just fine against the U.S., he believes.

Sharma’s answer is unnerving. A big part of the U.S. tech boom over the past 20 years has come from our ability to pull in the best and the brightest from India, Taiwan and other Asian countries, year after year. We’ve taken it for granted that these talented immigrants want to come here and that they will help the next generation of American start-ups achieve greatness.

But Sharma’s perspective demands our attention.

In 1993, he says, after graduating with flying colors from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, Sharma headed straight for the U.S. So did most of his classmates. Of the 40 people in Sharma’s graduating class at IIT Delhi, he says, all but three came to the U.S.

It was a smart move for him and a great deal for the U.S. Sharma earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University and has since started more than a half-dozen companies--building products, generating revenue, rewarding investors and creating jobs. Now he sits on five company boards and runs his own start-up, SolidCore Systems, in Palo Alto, Calif.

The U.S. is home to Sharma now. He’s applied for U.S. citizenship. He’s raising his children here. He wants the U.S. to be an engine of innovation, for U.S. companies to build sought-after products and to generate good returns for workers and shareholders.

But Sharma says the next generation of Indian engineers are unlikely to feel the way he does: Last year, only 10 of the 45 IIT graduates who went through the same program Sharma did decided to pursue jobs in the U.S., he says.

If this represents a trend, it will have significant consequences for the U.S. AnnaLee Saxenian, now dean of the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley, has devoted years to tracking the impact of immigrant entrepreneurs. Along with researchers at Duke University, she reported in January that foreign-born immigrants helped start one of every four U.S. technology start-ups over the past decade. Together, those companies employed 450,000 people and generated $52 billion in sales in 2005, according to the study.

As America staggers toward the next national election, we’ll hear plenty of slogans about making the U.S. "more competitive." Candidates will debate tax policies and vow to fix our public schools. Chances are you won’t hear them talking about making the U.S. more receptive to ambitious graduates from overseas. But they should.

But take another look at my first question: It doesn’t just apply to foreign nationals. If you’re a bright young person born in the U.S., where should you begin your career? In this country or abroad?

"Overseas," asserts Sharma--but this time, for positive reasons. In order for U.S. companies to be competitive, to serve the largest number of customers and build the most suitable products for customers all over the globe, they will need executives who have broad global experience.

Students are already sensing this trend: Several months ago, when I spoke to business school students touring Silicon Valley about job prospects, many said they were actively considering international opportunities, too.

It sounds like a contradiction--that the U.S. should continue to try to try to woo the best and the brightest from overseas even as homegrown emerging stars seek their fortunes outside our borders. But in a world where competition is truly global, that kind of exchange program makes sense--particularly if those Americans eventually return home and help build stronger companies.

Prof. Navin C. Nigam Chair Fund Raising

Dear Alumnus,

We are writing this letter to you regarding a fund raising effort for a "Prof. Navin C. Nigam Chair". Prof. Nigam was the director of IIT Delhi from '89-'94.

Dr. Nigam believed that the core of any world-class educational institution lies in the quality of its people and their research. He never doubted that the IITs can compete with any world class institution because they attract the best minds from India and abroad. Dr. Nigam's lifelong goal was to encourage and support world-class research at the IITs without reliance on government funds by focusing on excellence.

To help complete Prof. Nigam's vision and provide an incentive for top research talent at IIT Kanpur to continue their outstanding research work, we are establishing a "Professor Navin C. Nigam Chair" in his memory at IIT Kanpur, which was his intellectual home.

We are raising $100,000 toward a corpus. This chaired position will be offered to an outstanding faculty and will be held for three years during which period the recipient will receive an honorarium in addition to his/her salary.

Professor Navin C. Nigam was born in Kanpur and had a long illustrious career as a researcher and university administrator at various institutions across India. He obtained his Ph.D from Caltech and among numerous awards, was honored as a distinguished alumnus of Caltech in '91 for his seminal role in the development of engineering education and research at universities in India. He started his career as a young
faculty at IIT Kanpur from '69 until '81 where he held the positions of Dean, Head of Department and Deputy Director. Dr. Nigam held the position of Director at TIET Patiala ('81-'89), IIT Delhi ('89-'94), University of Goa ('95-'97), and IIT Roorkee ('97-'00). He was the Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) from '00 until his untimely passing away in '01.

As you are aware, raising funds for this chair will need extensive support and help from all of Prof. Nigam's colleagues, family, friends and IIT and TIET alumni. 11. Feature Film on IITs inIndia

As many of you might already be aware of that, Sameer Kohli (IITD Mech, 1989-93) is making a film on IITs. With over ten years behind him in the media industry, Sameer is writing a screenplay for a film that showcases the IIT brand and the IIT stamina to the world. The documentary has two parts.

PART II is specific to our association in Australia. PART I is common to all associations/ communities who are supporting to make the documentary. Sameer is presently looking at support from our end for this venture. Support in form of financial/funding, logistics and content. He is looking at a stay of about 7-10 days in Australia. He needs information from our side in terms of Interesting IITians that he can profile, success stories, the relevant locations/ cities of shoot, the initiatives taken, the statistics etc. so he may plan the shooting script. 11. Mr. Sudhir K. Tewatia, 84, BT, CE and he is Executive Committee member of IITDAA, as a geotechnical/civil engineer from IIT Delhi, He did some research work recently. On the basis of that, he has published a few papers in the reputed international journals. His two Papers were published in American Society of Testing and Materials Journal of Testing and Evaluation in September 2006 issue. Its a multi-disciplinary journal of all engineerings and applied sciences. On 5th January 2007, Springer's Journal Of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering published his paper online, however, hard copy will be available in April 2007 issue pp. 239-255. To have a look on Tewatia's papers google search "tewatia on consolidation" or "tewatia in geotechnical engineering". Tewatia worked under the guidance of Prof. Pratima Rani Bose (Head of Civil Engineering, Delhi College of Engineering) and Prof.(Emeritus) Asuri Sridharan (Ex-Deputi Director of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) and gives this credit to them. It is pleased to note that Prof. P.R.Bose is also alumni of IIT Delhi and Prof. A. Sridharan is distinguished alumni of Purdue University (USA).

1. JAAGRITIE
THE ON-CAMPUS LOCAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP CHALLENGE
(MAR 15 – APRIL 15, 2007)

This event will offer students a unique opportunity to solve a localized, on-campus problem which is of relevance to the efficient day-to-day working of the institute. Students often have several ideas about how to solve many of the problems affecting them, and either they do not know what to do with them or their ideas get mired in the various layers of red-tapism involved in the process. Jaagritie aims to provide them with a platform to air these views to the concerned people, and possibly even see them implemented.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this exercise is to give interested students a first-hand experience to solve a real-life problem which they are (quite possibly) facing every day. This will not only further their ability to think rationally and cohesively, but also give them valuable experience in analyzing the problems facing an organization as well as ways to solve them (local innovation). In short Jaagritie aims at mooting the spark of entrepreneurship in fellow IITians.

CONTEST DETAILS EDC would release a list of problems which are facing IIT amongst the students and provide a timeframe for solution of the problem. Some typical examples of these problems could be:
Ø Hostel Food and Messing
Ø Hostel Maintenance
Ø KLS
Ø Motor Vehicle Problem
Ø Attendance Problem
Ø Internet Speeds
Ø The Problem of Depression and Stress Management, et cetera Students would form teams among themselves (upto 5 members each), to come up with viable solutions to these relevant problems which affect life on-campus. They would be given a pre-decided timeframe to come up with solutions to their chosen problem.

PROBLEM ANALYSIS DRAFT

The problem analysis draft submitted initially to us shall be in the form of a .pdf or .doc document and needs to be mailed to us at jaagritie@gmail.com. The draft must have the following components: Problem statement and definitionProblem analysis – establish the extent of the problem and requirement of eradication.Problem tackling – component-wise breakup and suggested solution.Problem eradication implementation – how the contestant thinks he would take up the mantle, make the team and go about making his solution work.A short summary of his problem analysis of about 200 words.

Here is the tentative timeline/schedule for us:

Publicity round two on 1st April, 2007
Deadline for submission of entries – 2359 hrs on 9th April, 2007
Date of declaration of shortlisted entries – 11th April, 2007
Senate Room presentations – 14th April, 2007
Deadline for E-voting – 2359 hrs on 15th April, 2007
Publicity for the final event and e-voting on 14th April,2007.
Closure Event and Declaration of final result# – 16th April, 2007

JUDGING Manner of Judging- First round of entries: Shortlisting will be done by the EDC team on the basis of a preferential point system. The problem shall be seen under the following subheads: The extent of problem (as in how many people are affected by it)The realistic approach followed by the contestant in analyzing the problemThe depth of problemThe proposed team and timeline structure for tackling the problem Each subhead shall carry five points for every judging coordinator. Each EDC coordinator shall have an equal weightage for every entry; this means that for the four subhead structure given above, each problem has a weight of 20 points resting with each coordinator. The cumulative top six entries go in for the finals. *In case EDC members are participating too, then for their particular problem analysis, a shut-door preferential point structure will be followed. This essentially means that these particular participants are not allowed to be around while their entry is being judged. Also the net points that they get shall be scaled up. Final round: There are two aspects to the judging of the final round shortlists: panel of judges (75% weightage) and e-voting (25%) Panel of Judges: 75 % weightage They shall be requested to evaluate the final presentations and already submitted problem analysis in tandem with each other on a similar weightage criteria as above. The added subhead though shall be a presentation with a 10 point weight. E-voting: 25% weightage The voting can be done on the following email id: jaagritie@gmail.com uptil the given deadline. The summary of each shortlisted entry shall be uploaded on www.edciitd.blogspot.com and will be viewable on the same. The mails shall have the subject Jaagritie and shall have a 1-2-3 rating for three entries. The sender needs to put his name, entry number and mobile number as well. Incomplete e-votes shall not be entertained.

Every vote has a six point weight: 3 for each 1st, 2 for each 2nd and 1 for each 3rd.

We will finally scale it down to our scale.

Certain helpful guidelines for problem judging are:
Ø Quality of analysis of the problem: the problem analysis should be accurate, unbiased and realistic.
Ø Identification of the flaws in the current solution to the problem.
Ø To what extent will their solution achieve the desired outcome? Quantified data on the same would be appreciated, which would again depend on correctly identifying and characterizing all parameters relevant to the chosen problem.
Ø Sustainability of the proposed solution.
Ø Efficacy of the proposed solution on the following criteria: ü

Money required for implementation. ü
Proposed execution time of project. ü

Ease of incorporation of the proposed execution (e.g. how many departments would be involved, would it involve making significant amount of changes in the current setup etc.) PANEL OF JUDGES: For the judges, we need a three to four people panel. Prof. Shashi Mathur should be requested for that as one judge. I would be able to call Prof. Santosh Satya. HOD RDL to come as well. So we need two more.

*EDC student team members are eligible for participation, but will not be entitled to any prize money.

1. Nostalgia 2007

NOSTALGIA 2007

The again IITD Alumni musical evening played out successfully at Seminar Hall, IIT Delhi on 11th February 2007 (Sunday) evening; thanks to enthusiastic participation and excellent management by the backstage team. The program started with the kiddies section followed by performances by the Alumni. Sudip Mukherjee launched the evening to a melodious start .




Then Prof. Kushal Sen started Gazal. Then it was the tur n of the IITD’s `Manna Dey’ and `Kishore’ of midseventies. While Sandeepan Mookerjee (Raipur) had the audience clapping to the pulsating numbers. Ganesh was on piano-accordion and J K Khanna’s rhythmic.

The event would not have been possible but for the efforts of Ravi Raj Sagar and Alok Sahdev who worked for many hours over a period of two months to pu the event together. The compere Vinit Taneja who kept the s how going with their light banter needs a special mention. We acknowledge Arun Dhawan for providing AV equipment.

The IIT was gracious to include us in the dinner organised for the Pearl Reunion of the classes of 1970 and 1971. As a consequence all the money collected (Rs. 11,500) has been handed over to the IITD Alumni Association with the request that a cheque be issued in favour of the Pearl Endowment Fund.







Amongst the follow up actions decided upon are:
1) that we try and meet as frequently as possible. S.K. Bhatia will follow up
2) Considering that each subsequent batch will celebrate its Ruby Reunion simultaneous with another batch celebrating its Pearl Reunion, the IIT is requested, through the Dean of Alumni Affairs, to institutionalise the Ruby reunion.
3) In an effort to get as much contact information o n as many of their classmates as possible,



3. PEARL REUNION AT IIT DELHI

It was another occasion for the batches 1970 and 1971 to meet. The Pearl Reunion was held on 11-12 March 2007. It was a reunion after 35 years – for alumni who had passed out in the 1970-71. This was the second of its kind in IIT Delhi and was attended by approx. 100 alumni along with spouses.















It was an occasion marked by many events. A hilarious skit on life of a student at IIT was enacted by the students of the Dance and Dramatics Club. Presentations were made on “Growth of IIT Delhi” by the Director and “Fruitful Alumni Initiatives”

by Dean (AA&IP). The Alumni also visited the hostels and participated in the Board for Hostel Management night and Prize Distribution Function.









A Panel Discussion on “Future Vision and Alumni –Institute Interaction” in which Vision 2020 and the PanIIT movement were discussed was organized on 12th March. The Alumni then visited the Departments and interacted with the faculty and students. Finally at a feedback workshop the alumni complied a written feedback on suggestions for the Institute as well as how they could contribute to the growth of IIT Delhi.












The Alumni expressed their delight at being invited to visit the Institute and suggested that such reunions should be organized more often.




4. EDC


The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) is an initiative taken by IIT Delhi students to promote the concept of entrepreneurship on campus. A part of this promotion includes providing the required experience and knowledge for entrepreneurship.

A business plan is like a map and a compass for a business. Without it you're travelling blind. With a plan you set objectives, establish priorities, and provide for cash flow.

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell, IITD in association with Deloitte & Touche, a leading global professional firm providing consultancy services presented a Business Plan making workshop to lead you through the steps of developing an effective business plan with the overall purpose to let you know the process of "thinking it through" before venturing into a business held on 12th March at 4.45 PM at Seminar Hall, IIT Delhi.

Speakers' Profile
Representing D&T will be Mr.Atul Dhawan, Partner, Deloitte Haskins & Sells and Ms. Kalpana Jain, Director, Deloitte & Touche.


Atul is in charge of Deloitte's New Delhi office. He is the practice leader in India for Business Strategy, Restructuring and Outsourcing and is also the national coordinator for Deloitte's Emerging Markets Group in India. He has functional responsibility for the Management Consulting practice at New Delhi and has worked with multinational corporations, multilateral institutions, Indian companies in the private and public sector and Govt. agencies in various assignments.


Kalpana has over thirteen years of Industry and consultancy experience and currently manages the Corporate Finance practice of Deloitte in New Delhi, covering Northern India. Her work covers assisting clients in preparation of business plans for valuation, service licenses, funding and restructuring, carrying out techno-economic feasibility assessments for clients in a variety of Industry segments and many other roles and responsibilities.

A Workshop on how to convince a Funding Organisation to fund your Business Plan held on 14th March, Wednesday at 4:45 pm at Seminar Hall , IIT Delhi



This workshop was featured Mr. Mahesh Murthy, a seasoned VC, Mr. Gopal Krishna, an entrepreneur, and Mr. Ranjit Shastri, an angel investor. Through this workshop, they intended to give you a comprehensive view on how to pitch your business plan to a funding organization, when is the right time, what cautions to consider, what are the exit options you could provide your investors, and a lot more - and that too, from three different perspectives!

That was followed by a small session wherein participants from the audience asked to present some of their ideas, and a quick evaluation of these would be done by our panelists, giving you a practical feel of the same. Do bring along ideas if you want a first reaction from the pros.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Mahesh Murthy, founder and CEO of Pinstorm, has 20 years of marketing and communications experience – of which over 10 years are in online marketing. After dropping out of college, Mahesh sold vacuum cleaners from door to door and then found home in advertising with Grey in India and Ogilvy in Hong Kong, where he won international notoriety and awards as a creative director on HP, Microsoft, Unilever, The Economist, Pepsi and MTV - for whom he wrote and directed a spot voted "Asia's best commercial of the decade". He then moved to a Silicon Valley firm, CKS Partners (later, USWeb/ CKS) as Creative Director, General Manager and eventually, Partner – where he helped create and launch the first commercial version of Yahoo in 1995 and the "Earth's biggest bookstore" campaign for Amazon.com in 1997. After a successful NASDAQ IPO for CKS, Mahesh moved to head marketing at iCat, an e-commerce firm in Seattle, which was subsequently acquired by Intel. Mahesh then returned to India to run Channel V, a rival to MTV, till its sale to Newscorp in 2000 and then founded Passionfund to invest in and guide startups. Some of his investees include Geodesic, Compassbox – merged into Careerlauncher, Cypherix, Indiaproperties and Webdunia. Mahesh penned a reasonably infamous column for India's leading business magazines, Business Today and Businessworld, and is playing the Donald Trump-equivalent role in an Indian rip-off of The Apprentice, involving entrepreneurs and business plans. While running search marketing campaigns for his favourite charity in late 2003, Mahesh believed there was need to solve some big issues around technology and business models - and set up Pinstorm with a bunch of great people to do so. His sole value-addition to the business these days is to decide what music plays in the hall around lunchtime.


Mr. Gopal Krishna has over 16 years of Entrepreneurial experience in the US and India. Prior to starting a new stealth mode venture focused on India and China, he was the Head of Indian Operations for Pipal Research Corporation, a Chicago-based high-end, custom business research and analytics company (an affiliate of ICICI OpenSource).
Gopal was the Founder, Chairman & CEO of thinkIndia.com, a venture backed Silicon Valley new media start-up that merged with Rediff.com.

Mr. Ranjit Shastri cofounded PSI, Inc., an Investment advisory firm incorporated in New York with an associated company in India. PSi has assisted with a wide range of international investors in India.Mr. Shastri serves on the boards of several companies, including that of Vicker's Systems India Ltd. A subsidiary of Eaton Corporation. He is also a member of the Indian Venture Capitalist Association.
