E-Digest02: Job Posting

Job Posting

1. Job opportunity for Secretary General

Dear All,

Pan-IIT Alumni India (PIAI) is a nationally registered non-profit society. It is run by a Board consisting of two alumni who are Director's nominees from each of the seven IIT's. The presidents of the alumni associations are also invited members of the Board.

PIAI's mission is fourfold - to enhance the IIT brand, to engage in advocacy, to contribute to nation-building and to provide networking opportunities to IITians. PIAI also seeks to engage with the IIT system to improve its governance and effective functioning.

The global Pan-IIT movement is about five years old, with a global structure as well as regional organisations, of which PIAI is a significant one. While PIAI is autonomous it works in coordination with other global Pan-IIT entities.

PIAI is looking for a dynamic and public spirited Secretary General, who will work as chief executive. He will work closely with the Global as well as Indian Board, reporting to the Chairman of PIAI on a regular basis. He will oversee and coordinate PIAI projects, help in fund raising, organise, oversee and manage the smooth functioning of the secretariat, help build position papers, assist in advocacy and provide effective leadership to the organisation. He should be a self-starter and entrepreneurial.

This position is an opportunity to shape and guide an organisation with a far reaching impact, and also an opportunity to work with some of the finest minds. It is an assignment which enables one to "give back" to the system.

The compensation package is competitive, and can be tailored to suit the skills and expectations of exceptional candidates. Since PIAI is a non-profit entity, it cannot compete with the private sector, but will strive to match with compensatory features.

Interested candidates may apply in confidence to Chairman of PIAI, Ashank Desai, ashankd@mastek.com.

4. Pan IIT 2008 in Chennai

My dear fraternity brothers from IITs,

I am V.Varadarajan of 1966 batch B.Tech Mechanical from IITM.

The current secretary PS Ramanathan of IITMadras alumni association has worked hard behind the scenes to get Chennai selected as the next venue for the paniit 2008 event. This also will coincide with the golden jubilee celebration of iitmadras starting from July 2008 extending to July 2009.

I volunteered to lead the participation activities for the forthcoming paniit 2008. This is being finalised for the 3rd week of December 2008. But before we do anything else we need about 200 active alumni preferably in Chennai, from all iits to take ownership for this event and give this event a direction to make this a success.

Mr. Santhanam an alumnus of IITM has kindly agreed to chair this event. We had couple of gatherings to brain storm on what and how to go about this.

A few core activities have been identified. Some of them are to chart a program for the 3 day function, organizing the venue. Marketing and PR, entertainment, and participation etc. Now we need to populate these activities with volunteers to take this forward. We like to have at least one from each iits in these committees.

All those interested in this are requested to reply with the activity you interested in. We will get you included in a committee of your choice wherever possible. Those who have attended the earlier conferences may have realized what a great opportunity this is to bring the alumni together.

I am sure you have all experienced greater friendship develop, when we take on a project like this and complete it a team. You are welcome to send this note to any one who you know will be interested in participating.

Please do respond.

In recognition of their significant efforts and contributions made by them for the development and progress of the Institute.

Delivering the convocation address, Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia stated that this institution has built an Indian brand name which is recognised around the world. The IITs stand out as outstanding examples of institutions providing top quality engineering education at the undergraduate level, not only in India but around the world figuring regularly in global lists of the top 200 universities. Shri Ahluwalia added that you are fortunate to be entering your working life at a time when India seems well on the way to occupying her rightful place in the world. This transformation, which has now begun, will play itself out over the next two or three decades. Your generation will benefit from it enormously. I have no doubt you will see much more rapid

change than our generation did, and you will find it both exciting and challenging. The first is pace of growth, the second pace of technology change, and the third globalisation. The three are closely interrelated and mutually reinforcing. As far as pace of growth is concerned, the economy is growing at about 9% and with the right economic policies we can maintain that growth rate, and perhaps even improve upon it, over the next twenty years. With population growing more slowly at 1.5% and also decelerating, it means our per capita income will grow at 7.5% or a little more. At that rate, per capita income will double in 9 years, he said. The second reason for rapid change is that technology is changing much faster. That is certainly true in the area of information and communication technology. The IT and communications revolution has changed the way people organise their lives and their businesses. It has created new businesses which could

not exist earlier. And yet, it is remarkable how recently and rapidly this has happened.

In his address, he also mentioned that the Indian educational system is at cross roads. I look at it as the age-old conflict of quantity versus quality. With a billion plus population with more than one fifth of them in an age group to be educated, quantity is a social responsibility. On the other hand, in the globalized world of today on the threshold of a knowledge era, quality education is a necessity. The challenge is on reconciling quantity with quality. The challenge is not only to the educators but to all- the government, the ducationists and the community as a whole.

Welcoming the Chief Guest, Prof. Ramamurthy stated that Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission and a well known economist of international standing, has been intimately connected with the Indian economy for nearly three decades. Resurgent India will

remember him as the midwife of the Indian economic reforms of the nineties that laid the foundation stone for what we are seeing in the marketplace today.

On this occation, Prof. Surendra Prasad, Director, presented a brief report and highlighted the activities, achievements and future plans of the Institute. Prof. Prasad informed that in a recent survey conducted by the INDIA TODAY, IIT Delhi was ranked at No. 2 among the top engineering colleges in India. He stated that IIT Delhi is committed to provide excellent human resource to meet national needs and global expectations. It is a unique institution and a dream destination for those who wish to be leaders in the technology areas and management. IIT Delhi is internationally recognised for delivering excellent education at UG level. It is our constant endeavour to do well in carrying out innovative research & development activities as well.

Appreciating the efforts and contributions made by its alumni, he stated that our alumni have extended significant support to the Institute for its academic and research programmes by way of instituting chairs in various fields at the Institute. As on date, 30 Chairs are in operation at the Institute. The Institute has been actively involved in collaborative programmes with national and international organizations/ universities to remain at the forefront in scientific and technological development and to share the knowledge for mutual benefits. IIT Delhi has currently 49 MoUs/Agreements with Foreign Institutions/Organizations and 37 MoUs/ Agreements with Indian Institutions/Organizations. The main objectives of collaboration include exchange of students and faculty, joint research, and fellowships for training and research at doctoral and post-doctoral levels, he said. Recognising the efforts and contributions made by the faculty

of the institute, he said, the quality of an academic institution largely depends on the faculty. Our Faculty is one of the finest in the country and is recognized internationally for their quality of research. They contribute a lot for the development of the nation by being associated with a large number of decisionmaking bodies in providing advice on policy matters and technical issues. Many of our faculty members serve on the editorial Boards of reputed journals, review papers for publications, serve on committees for recruitment of professionals, and are on the Boards of many institutions and organizations. Several faculty members have been bestowed with honours/awards and elected as fellows of several professional national/international bodies. Our academic programmes cover a wide range of science and engineering disciplines. In B.Tech. Programmes, for which the entry is through the Joint Entrance Examination, we have steadily increased our intake and during the year 2006-2007, 2265 UG students were on roll. The enrolment of postgraduate students during the year 2006-2007 was 2666. These figures

include 767 women students. There were 20 foreign students from 9 countries pursuing undergraduate/postgraduate education at the Institute. In order to make IIT Delhi more

international in character and to make better use of international intellectual resources, we are constantly working towards increasing the strength of international students and faculty in the campus, he said.

He informed the gathering that in order to motivate the students, the Institute has instituted a scheme for grant of partial financial assistance to Ph.D., M.Tech., M.Des., M.S. (R) and MBA students and post-doctoral fellows working in various projects for attending international conferences. Under this scheme, a grant of Rs.20,000/- is given to the selected student as partial financial assistance and during the year, a total of 46 students have been given this grant. It is proposed to increase this number to 80 during the current year. With regard to the sponsored research and consultancy activities of the Institute, he reported that the Institute accords importance to research and development projects sponsored by various agencies and industry. During the year 92 Sponsored Research Projects with a total funding of Rs. 38.82 crores were undertaken. Consultancy assignments worth Rs. 16.55 crores were undertaken at the Institute during the year. These include 816 Consultancy Jobs worth Rs. 12.71 crores undertaken by

IRD, 45 Technology Development Projects / Contract Research Projects worth Rs. 3.26 crores undertaken by FITT and 15 HRD Programmes with a value of Rs. 57.56 lacs organized by FITT. He further added that to remain in the forefront on the scientific and technology development and to share the experience and knowledge, the Institute is actively involved in colla-borative programmes with international organizations/universities. A large number of collaborative Research Projects are under operation with Institutes/Organisations of Belgium, European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and USA. Major research project activities have also been undertaken in the areas of national importance. Emphasising the need for practical training of students and later their placement, he said “Training & Placement is an important activity of the Institute. The T&P Unit is mainly

responsible for arranging practical training of the undergraduate students to meet their degree requirement and to provide world class job opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students after graduation for suitable jobs in the industry and various private and public sector organizations. During the year under report, the T&P Unit invited Senior Executives of major industries / organizations to give preplacement talks to the students at the Campus which helped them acquire better knowledge about various organizations prior to the commencement of campus interviews. During the report period, 275 campus / local interviews were organized as a result of which 873 students were placed.” One of the important tasks taken up by us at IIT Delhi in the last one year was to set up clear goals for taking the Institute to the next higher level in the next 5 years, together with a road-map to meet these goals. The entire Institute, and the Deans and Deputy Directors have collectively participated in this effort and we are determined that through these efforts, IIT Delhi will make a significant movement towards becoming a world-class Institution of higher education and research. As part of this process, some of the new initiatives taken include the setting up of a School of Biosciences, a facility for nano-fabrication and a facility for micro-engineering and manufacturing, he said.

5. Class of 1983 Reunion

Dear Friends,

A Silver Jubilee Reunion comes once in a lifetime, and for the batch of '83, this is the year when we will come together again. This will be the opportunity to relive the five years of our youth - our formative years - our glorious past. We will not get another chance to meet so many of our batch-mates who were once an indivisible part of our lives. We hope to meet again the many friends of yesteryears and hope to recognize them after 25 years have gone by.

As communicated earlier, the Silver Jubilee Event is being held from the 22-25 December this year, 2007. All 1983 graduates, PGs (BTech, MS, MTech, PhDs, etc) are invited along with their families.

Families are an integral part of this event - they have to see what we have been talking to them about - with their own eyes. You can get your children and spouse to walk the corridors of your hostel and meet with the profs - specially the ones from whom you once kept a long distance. You can take time out to explore the examination halls where you once spent time looking at the ceiling or sideways since the answers to confounding questions were almost always found on other people's scribble sheets. You can do almost whatever you want back at IITD

Please pull in all those with whom you are in touch, help them make up their minds. We need to make the best of this opportunity. The earlier batches enjoyed every bit of their bash and wanted more. Come and let's make this the best bash of our lives.

Most of the details have already been worked out and the program is already sent to you. However, suggestions/ ideas are welcome for any minor changes in the schedule/ events.

6. Get together of IITD 1966 & 1967 batches

X’clusive ’66 / ’67 batch (VINDYACHALs & SHIVALIKs) get together

Few of us have been meeting at the functions organized by the IITD Alumni Association, but many have not been able to join for one reason or the other and those who did desired an exclusive meet of possibly all of the 1961 & 1962 entries who formed a big joint family at Shivalik & Vindyachal and swam across the ‘nullah’ to attend classes during monsoon.

We are now planning to have a get together (with families-all generations included) exclusively of those who have lived & blossomed together at the two hostels of the period – SHIVALIK & VINDHYACHAL during the years 1961 – 1967.

We will try to locate & invite the faculty of those years. Any one in touch with them (Prof Moore, Indrasen, Jha, Gulati, Subhash etc), please inform their contact details.

As during x-mas period (25 Dec-1st Jan) most of us can travel to Delhi, the day/date proposed is Saturday 29th Dec’07.

If you are in touch with any alumnus of 66 & 67 batches. Please forward this mail (with cc to IITDAA) to inform us their contact details.

Please respond confirming your participation or offering a suggestion to
